Spectacle or sport?

Inspired by a post from good friend Stanley Roper on his new blog, I, too, am having difficulty even feigning interest in the Winter Olympics.

For me, it's just plain old apathy. Am I supposed to pretend, for two weeks, that I enjoy figure skating, or curling? I was heartened, however, when I saw a package of highlights from the Turin Opening Ceremonies. And here I thought the U.S. had cornered the market on cheesiness. On this, I openly root for a challenge to American dominance.

One caveat: I might be tempted to watch downhill skiier Jeremy Bloom in an event or two. I may be a bandwagon patriot, but I'm still a red-blooded gay male!
