Allah didn't create Achmed and Steve!

We've seen what a cartoon can do to those fragile Islamic sensibilities. Imagine the reaction likely to follow the release of "In the Name of Allah," which examines the struggles faced by queer Muslims.

Parvez Sharma, a gay Indian Muslim, is directing the pic, which looks at gay, lesbian, and transgender Muslims in both the Middle East and the West.

"The world right now needs to understand Islam, and these are the most unlikely storytellers of Islam," said Sandi Dubowski, who is producing "Allah."

Sharma and Dubowski plan to submit the pic to all major festivals in the Muslim world as well as in the West, but if it's rejected, Dubowski said, "We'll find ways of screening it in every Muslim nation, even if it's underground."

Dubowski already faced problems with the 2001 international release of "Trembling Before G-d," about gay Orthodox Jews, though I don't remember any theaters burning or threats of beheading.
