Hey Vern

So I resolved to stay home and do my taxes tonight. Two glasses of wine later, I've fallen under the spell of "Oz" ... an old addiciton resurfaces. Which reminds me, is there a better character actor working today than JK Simmons, a.k.a. Vern Schillinger?

The guy's so good in the role it's a wonder he hasn't been typecast. Fortunately, he's avoided the pigeonhole (most recently turning in quality work as Aaron Eckhart's boss in "Thank You For Smoking.") When you rank TV's most charismastic villains, the line begins with 'ole J.R. (Ewing) --- 900 channels and not one airs "Dallas" reruns? --- but JK follows closely behind.

Now there's a missed opportunity: Larry Hagman as Schillinger's daddy.
