Before he was Ziggy

Save for rabid devotees, David Bowie's first album is barely remembered. Most people I've played it for react similarly: "that's Bowie? I've never heard these songs." I wouldn't have, either, if not for my good pal Dr. Bob, aka Danny Donut.

The self-titled album is short on theatrics -- although no one does over-the-top better than Bowie. But if you're jonesing for a nostalgic trip down Carnaby Road, look no further (another song from Bowie's early years, "Dig Everything," is also highly recommended, although as far as I can tell it's available only via download).

My faves from "David Bowie," released in 1967:

*"Silly Boy Blue"

*"When I Live My Dream" (damn near perfect love song)

*"There is a Happy Land" (wistful ode to childhood)

*"Rubber Band"

and

*"Sell Me a Coat."
