May the market forces be with you

I never thought it possible, but for once I'm actually encouraged by what George Lucas has to say.

"In the future, almost everything that gets shown in theaters will be indie movies," Lucas declared. "I predict that by 2025 the average movie will cost only $15 million."

While that may scare the "family-friendly" crowd (independent movies = gay cowboys, transvestites and Michael Moore), I find it refreshing. Blockbusters, with few exceptions, tend to suck. And what might this do to the publicity arms of the major studios, like "Entertainment Tonight" and the loathsome Pat O'Brien? Could they become unnecessary, or, even better, irrelevant?

Damn, now I'm getting giddy.

"The market forces that exist today make it unrealistic to spend $200 million on a movie," Lucas said. "Those movies can't make their money back anymore. Look at what happened with 'King Kong.'"

I am all for the indies! Real sustenance instead of remakes of older films like King Kong and War of the Worlds.
