Actor least likely to make an impression

Has there ever a more non-threatening screen presence than Dermot Mulroney (who reeks of a celluloid Darrin --- either one --- from "Bewitched")? Must be why he gets so much work.

Easy to envision those casting sessions. Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, whomever: "Find an actor who can't possibly upstage me." Director: "No worries. I've got Dermot on speed dial."

Every generation has their Casper Milquetoast. Dermot's ours.

Maybe he's just a victim of typecasting. He wasn't bad in "About Schmidt," or "Living in Oblivion." But check out the rest of his resume:

*"Must Love Dogs"
*"The Wedding Date"
*"My Best Friend's Wedding"
*"How to Make an American Quilt"
*"The Thing Called Love"
*"The Family Stone"

And so on ...

All now playing at the Hell Cineplex (borrowing from a regular feature in the late, lametented "Spy" magazine).
