And when the queen needed a crown, he was treated royally

Contrarians require trusty allies, and I couldn't have scored better. From Columbus to L.A. to D.C., I saw a good bit of my West Coast posse over the holidays, and while other friendships seem to wither when split by time and space, mine have flourished.

It's a difficult adjustment, seeing them only once or twice a year. I'm almost reduced to whining about the unfairness of it all, occasionally fostering a dependence on nostalgia. Can't go there all the time, but it's a fun place to visit.

Not as fun as my weekend in Columbus, however. I even got a kiss on New Year's, preceeded by a knockout performance from D and G (pictured above: left, foreground; right, rear, respectively) and their band, Guinea Worms. I was particularly partial to "C.H.U.D."

An encounter with a "working girl" named Brandia capped our holiday. She won us over by generously lowballing estimates of our age (of course, her profession relies on customer satisfaction). Unfortunately, I disappointed her on the dance floor, flunking my first booty call. A-Town down, 'Dia.

Who knew it would be so difficult to check out of Ohio?
